Marketing & Getting Customers
How does lead generation work, and when does a contact become a real sales lead?
The short answer
Lead generation helps a likely buyer notice your business and take a trackable step. Examples include requesting a quote, booking a call, joining a relevant email list, or starting checkout. A contact becomes a sales lead when there is evidence of fit and possible buying intent, not merely because you have an email address.
Separate audience, contact, lead, and opportunity
- Audience member: saw or followed something.
- Contact: gave you a legitimate way to communicate.
- Lead: matches important fit criteria and has shown relevant interest.
- Qualified opportunity: has a problem, authority, timing, and plausible budget worth a sales conversation.
Someone who downloads a meal-planning checklist is not automatically a lead for $2,000 business coaching. A clinic owner who requests pricing for your clinic-booking setup may be.
Define qualification before collecting names
Choose three to five signals: customer type, problem, location, budget range, timeline, or required platform. Ask only what you need at the current step.
Example form:
- What are you trying to change?
- Which platform do you use?
- When would you like to begin?
- Which budget range has been approved?
Don’t hide a sales call behind a “free consultation” if it is only a pitch.
Give each lead a next action
Record source, permission, need, qualification, owner, status, next date, and outcome. A lead without a next action is a name in a database.
The SBA’s business-planning guidance recommends defining customer segments, channels, relationships, and how a sale happens. Lead generation connects those choices operationally.
Protect consent and data
Do not buy or scrape lists and assume the people are leads. Follow privacy, email, text, and calling rules in every applicable jurisdiction. The FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide covers U.S. commercial email requirements, including opt-outs. Other laws can be stricter.
