Marketing & Getting Customers
Why isn't my marketing generating sales, and how do I diagnose what is failing?
The short answer
Trace the path from qualified reach to purchase and find the first stage where people stop. Marketing can fail because the wrong people see it, the message is unclear, the offer is weak, trust is missing, follow-up breaks, checkout fails, or the economics never worked.
Build a one-page funnel
For one offer and time period, record:
- qualified people reached.
- visits or replies.
- leads.
- sales conversations or checkout starts.
- purchases.
- refunds.
- contribution after variable cost and marketing.
Use counts before percentages. “Conversion fell 50 percent” may mean four sales became two, which needs different interpretation than 400 becoming 200.
Read the first weak transition
Reach without attention: audience, hook, or placement may be wrong.
Attention without inquiry: the problem, outcome, proof, or call to action may be unclear.
Inquiry without offer: response time or qualification may be failing.
Offer without purchase: fit, risk, terms, price explanation, or approval process may be blocking the decision.
Checkout without payment: test mobile layout, shipping, tax, payment methods, errors, and confirmation.
Sales without profit: calculate fulfillment, fees, refunds, support, and acquisition cost.
Verify measurement before changing strategy
Make a test purchase or inquiry and confirm each event and notification. Google’s Analytics ecommerce guide describes events for product views, carts, checkout, purchase, and refunds. If purchase tracking fires twice, your dashboard can celebrate sales that did not happen.
Ask for evidence at the stuck point
Review recordings only with lawful consent and careful privacy controls. Often a simpler method works: five customer interviews, support messages, search terms, abandoned checkout reports, and lost-proposal notes.
The SBA’s market research guidance recommends studying demand, alternatives, saturation, price, and direct customer reactions. Use that when the problem begins before the funnel.
Change one thing
Write a hypothesis: “Qualified visitors are not inquiring because the page hides the starting price.” Add the price explanation, define the observation period and minimum sample, and leave the audience and offer unchanged.
The Content Marketing Business system is relevant if the diagnosed gap is useful content that helps the right buyer find and trust the offer. Diagnosis comes first.
