How do I show credible expertise when I'm a new coach without exaggerating my experience?

The short answer

Be exact about what you know, where you learned it, and what you have actually done. Credibility grows faster from a useful demonstration and honest boundary than from calling yourself a “leading expert” before the evidence exists.

Build an evidence inventory

List relevant work experience, formal education, coaching training, supervised practice, lived experience, volunteer work, and results you can document. Separate coaching results from achievements you earned in another role. Being a successful manager may inform leadership coaching, but it does not mean every client will reproduce your career.

On your website, use specific language: “completed 60 hours of coach training,” “managed a team of 12,” or “coached five founding clients.” Name a credential only if you hold it, and link to the issuing body when helpful.

ICF’s accreditation standards distinguish programs that have undergone its review from programs that have not (ICF accreditation standards). Do not imply your training or certificate is ICF-accredited unless that is verifiably true.

Let people experience your thinking

Publish a detailed answer to a real niche question, teach a small workshop, or share an anonymized process example. Show the questions you ask and decisions you help a client examine. Do not reveal client details or turn someone’s private struggle into content.

Ask former clients for honest feedback after the work. Never write the testimonial for them or condition a discount on praise. FTC rules prohibit fake reviews and incentives tied to a particular positive or negative sentiment (FTC reviews rule Q&A).

State the boundary with confidence

Explain what coaching can support and when you refer to a therapist, lawyer, doctor, financial professional, or other specialist. Keep learning, seek supervision or mentoring, and correct inaccurate claims quickly.

You do not need to look experienced in everything. You need to be trustworthy in the specific work you are ready to do.
