How do I price Etsy products after fees and costs?
The short answer
Price from the money one order must cover, not from what nearby shops charge. Your Etsy price needs to pay for the product, your labor, packaging, marketplace and payment fees, any shipping you absorb, expected mistakes, overhead, and profit. A sale that brings in cash can still lose money.
Calculate one order from the bottom up
Start with this worksheet:
Required price = direct product cost + labor + packaging + shipping subsidy + fixed order fees + percentage-based fees + overhead allowance + target profit
Percentage fees depend on the final price, so a spreadsheet is easier than mental math. Etsy lists listing, transaction, and payment-processing fees as the core seller fees on its Fee Basics page. Payment-processing rates vary by country and apply to the order total under Etsy's payment-processing explanation. Check the live pages for your shop rather than copying somebody else's percentage.
Here is an illustrative order:
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Materials or production | $12.00 |
| Labor | $8.00 |
| Packaging | $1.50 |
| Shipping you absorb | $4.00 |
| Fee allowance | $5.50 |
| Overhead and mistake reserve | $2.00 |
| Target profit | $7.00 |
| Required customer revenue | $40.00 |
At $40, the example leaves $7 only if the $5.50 fee allowance is accurate for that particular order. If an optional advertising fee applies, or the buyer orders from a location with different costs, the profit changes.
Price three order scenarios
Before publishing, model:
- Ordinary order: normal platform and payment fees.
- Discounted order: your planned coupon or sale price.
- Higher-cost order: an attributed Offsite Ads order, replacement, or unusually expensive shipping zone.
Etsy says an Offsite Ads fee is charged when an attributed click leads to a purchase within its attribution window, with the rate depending on shop revenue. The current terms and opt-out rules are on Etsy's Offsite Ads page. You do not have to earn your full target profit in every rare worst case. But you should know whether that case wipes out the entire order.
Pay yourself for work buyers cannot see
Labor is not only the minutes spent making the item. Include personalization messages, file preparation, quality checking, packing, and a reasonable share of customer service. For digital products, the first copy may take hours even when delivery is automatic. Decide how many sales you realistically expect the design to earn, then spread development cost across that number.
Suppose a template takes six hours to create and you value that work at $25 per hour. That is $150 in development. If you expect 30 sales, allocate $5 per sale before ongoing fees and support. If you expect 300 sales without evidence, you can make almost any price look profitable on paper, so use a conservative number.
Use competitors as a reality check
After you find your required price, compare it with the market. If yours is much higher, do not automatically cut it. Ask whether your cost is too high, your offer needs a clearer difference, or the market simply cannot support your model. If your price is much lower, check for forgotten labor and fees before celebrating.
