What should a social media manager include in a monthly report, and which metrics matter?

The short answer

Report what the client was trying to accomplish, what you did, what changed, what you learned, and what you recommend next. Use a small set of metrics tied to the goal instead of filling slides with every number the platform exports.

Start with the business question

For awareness, report qualified reach, frequency, video retention, profile visits, and brand search or direct traffic where available. For engagement, show meaningful comments, saves, shares, and replies, not only likes. For leads or sales, show landing-page visits, form completions, booked calls, purchases, conversion rate, and tracked revenue with clear attribution limits.

Define every metric and compare the same period length. Separate paid from organic. Note campaigns, launches, outages, and unusual posts that make the month incomparable.

Use a one-page structure

  1. Goal and current status.
  2. Three to five key metrics with prior-period comparison.
  3. Best and weakest content with a reasoned explanation.
  4. Audience or customer questions worth noticing.
  5. Work completed and tests run.
  6. Three recommendations with an owner and date.

Do not claim causation merely because sales rose after a popular post. Explain tracking gaps, attribution windows, and offline activity.

Turn numbers into decisions

“Reach increased 30 percent” is not a conclusion. “Reach increased after three partner posts, but site visits did not. Next month we will tighten the call to action and tag each partner link” is useful.

Use the platform’s first-party analytics where possible and export key data because definitions and interfaces change. Meta Business Suite provides account insights and content performance within the business tools (Meta Business Suite overview).

Protect customer privacy. Aggregate results and do not paste private messages or identifying customer details into reports unless necessary and authorized. End the meeting by agreeing on the next month’s goal, not by admiring a chart.
