Selling & Business Models
How do I get my first social media management client?
The short answer
Choose one kind of client, create one useful sample system, and personally approach businesses whose social presence has a problem you can solve. Your first client is more likely to hire clear judgment than a person who promises instant followers.
Build something a client can inspect
Create a 14-day concept calendar for a realistic business. Include the audience, goal, content pillars, sample captions and creative, approval flow, community-response examples, and a one-page report. Label the work as a concept.
Then choose 15 businesses you understand. Look for a specific, respectful opportunity: unanswered customer questions, inconsistent location details, no path from posts to services, or useful expertise that is not being explained.
Send a short personal note with one observation and one practical idea. Do not send an automated “I found 37 errors” scare report. Ask for a 20-minute conversation about a fixed starter package.
Make the first offer bounded
Define platform, setup, post count and formats, raw-asset responsibility, approvals, revision limit, comment coverage, report, timeline, and total price. Use client-owned accounts and delegated permissions. Meta supports adding people and assigning selected business assets (Meta access guidance).
Run the first month professionally: agreement, deposit, kickoff, baseline metrics, content calendar, written approvals, and closeout review. Do not guarantee reach, followers, leads, or sales.
Earn honest proof
At the end, show what was done, what changed, what you learned, and what you recommend. Ask for candid feedback and permission before publishing any client result. FTC rules prohibit fake reviews and incentives conditioned on positive sentiment (FTC reviews rule Q&A).
Turn the project into a short case study and ask the client whether one suitable business owner comes to mind. One carefully served client can become your portfolio, process test, and first referral source.
