How do affiliate links affect SEO, and how should I mark them?

The short answer

Affiliate links are not automatically bad for SEO. Mark compensated links with rel="sponsored", disclose the relationship clearly to readers, and make the page valuable without the commission. Problems arise when paid links are left unqualified or the site publishes thin pages mainly to send people elsewhere.

The HTML attribute speaks to search systems. The disclosure speaks to a person. You need both.

Mark the link relationship in HTML

Google's outbound-link guidance recommends rel="sponsored" for advertisements, paid placements, and other compensated links. It says nofollow remains acceptable, although sponsored is preferred.

A typical link looks like:

<a href="https://merchant.example/product" rel="sponsored">See the product</a>

If a link is both sponsored and user-generated, multiple values can be combined where appropriate. Configure the affiliate-link tool or WordPress plugin, then inspect the published page source. Do not assume a checkbox worked.

rel="sponsored" does not hide the link, block readers, or replace a disclosure. It identifies the relationship for search engines.

Disclose where the recommendation happens

Use plain language before or beside the first affiliate link: “If you buy through these links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.” Repeat when a reader could enter the page below the first disclosure or when the format requires it.

The FTC's endorsement guidance says disclosures should be clear and conspicuous and discusses affiliate relationships specifically. A vague “partner link” may not explain the financial connection. Rules vary by location, so check applicable law and seek qualified advice when needed.

Make the page useful without the links

Provide original testing, decision criteria, limitations, examples, pricing context, alternatives, and who should not buy. Link to primary product documentation for factual claims. Date material that can change and schedule reviews for price, availability, terms, and broken links.

Google's people-first content guidance asks whether a page provides original information, substantial value, and a satisfying answer. A collection of merchant descriptions rewritten around buttons does not meet that editorial standard.

Audit affiliate links quarterly

Export all affiliate URLs and check destination, redirect chain, status, rel value, disclosure visibility, product availability, commission status, and content accuracy. Remove dead programs and update recommendations that no longer fit.

Track approved commission rather than clicks alone. Keep a change log so you know when a recommendation and its evidence were last reviewed.
