Marketing & Getting Customers
When does an ad campaign need a dedicated landing page instead of my normal website?
The short answer
Use a dedicated landing page when the ad promotes one audience, problem, offer, event, or campaign and your normal page makes visitors sort through unrelated choices. Keep the normal website page when it already continues the ad's promise clearly and gives the same visitor one obvious next step.
Use the five-second continuation test
Read the ad, click the destination, and look only at the first screen. Can a new visitor answer all four questions without hunting?
- Am I in the right place?
- Is this the same offer I clicked?
- Is it meant for someone like me?
- What do I do next?
If the ad promotes a free kitchen-design consultation but the destination opens on a homepage featuring cabinets, bathrooms, flooring, commercial work, and a newsletter, build a focused page. If the existing kitchen-design page already has the right message and action, duplicating it adds maintenance without adding clarity.
Google's landing-page guidance connects landing-page experience with usefulness, relevance, navigation, and whether the page matches what people expect after the ad.
What a dedicated page should contain
Start with the message, not a decorative template:
- A headline that continues the ad's specific promise.
- A short explanation of the result and who the offer fits.
- Details about what is included, price or pricing process, and timing.
- Relevant proof, such as a case example, review, demonstration, or credentials.
- Answers to the objections most likely to stop this buyer.
- One primary action, repeated where it naturally helps.
- Honest terms, privacy information, and contact details.
Keep normal navigation when visitors reasonably need it to check the business. Removing every exit can feel less trustworthy for a new or high-consideration service.
When a separate page is especially useful
- Each ad group targets a genuinely different service or customer.
- An event or seasonal offer has its own deadline and terms.
- You need clean measurement for one campaign.
- The regular product page serves existing customers but the ad reaches newcomers.
- The offer requires qualifying questions before booking.
Don't create ten pages that differ only by one city or keyword. One strong page can serve several closely related ads. If you run an experiment, Google recommends testing one variable at a time so you can tell what caused the result.
