Content & Growing an Audience

Why is my new YouTube channel getting few views or subscribers, and what should I fix first?

The short answer

Find the first weak step: too few impressions, too few clicks from those impressions, viewers leaving early, or viewers finishing without wanting another video. Fix that step instead of changing the niche, camera, title, thumbnail, and schedule all at once.

Low numbers are normal evidence on a new channel. They are not yet enough evidence for a grand theory about the algorithm.

Read the path in order

Open Analytics for one video and ask:

  1. Impressions: Was the thumbnail shown?
  2. Click-through rate: Did the package earn a view?
  3. Opening retention: Did the first 30 seconds deliver the promised topic?
  4. Overall retention: Where did interest fall or rise?
  5. Next action: Did viewers watch another video, subscribe, comment, or visit the relevant link?

YouTube's performance FAQ says Home recommendations consider performance and relevance to the audience, while Search considers how well the title, description, and video match the query along with engagement for that search.

Fix the earliest break

If impressions are scarce, check whether the topic has an identifiable audience and whether the title and description use the words that audience uses. Build several related videos so the channel offers a clear subject, not random experiments.

If impressions arrive but clicks do not, improve the title-thumbnail promise. Make the outcome specific, readable, and accurate. Do not use a dramatic image that the video cannot satisfy.

If viewers click and leave quickly, shorten the greeting, remove repeated setup, and show the result or stakes early. The audience-retention report identifies moments that held attention or lost it.

If viewers stay but do not subscribe, that is not automatically a failure. Ask whether the video leads naturally to another useful question. Add a verbal recommendation, end screen, and description link to the next video. A subscriber count grows more easily when the channel has a recognizable promise and more than one relevant answer.

Use enough data to make one change

YouTube cautions against judging click-through rate without a substantial number of impressions, because traffic sources and small fluctuations can distort the comparison. Avoid replacing packaging repeatedly in the first few hours.

Review the latest six videos as a group. Note topic, traffic source, impressions, click-through rate, first-30-second retention, average view duration, returning viewers, and production time. Choose one hypothesis for the next two videos.

For example: “People click the pricing topics but leave during my 45-second introduction. The next two will show the finished example in the first ten seconds.” That is a test you can learn from.
