Marketing & Getting Customers

Can a home-based or service-area business use Google Business Profile without showing a home address, and how do I set it up?

The short answer

Yes, if you meet customers face to face at their locations. Set up a service-area Business Profile, enter your real address for verification, and hide that address from customers. An online-only business that never meets customers in person isn't eligible simply because its owner works from home.

Check eligibility before you create anything

Google's Business Profile introduction says profiles are for storefronts and businesses that provide in-person service where customers are. A remote bookkeeper serving clients entirely by phone and email would not qualify. A house cleaner, mobile notary, pet sitter, or photographer who travels to clients may qualify.

Don't invent a storefront, rent a mailbox, or use a virtual office just to put a pin on the map. Google requires accurate real-world information, and a policy workaround can cost you the whole profile later.

Set it up without publishing your home

  1. Search Google Maps for your business name and city first. If a profile already exists, claim it instead of creating a duplicate.
  2. Add the business using the real name customers see on your website, invoices, and branding.
  3. Choose a specific primary category that describes the main service you provide.
  4. Enter the real base address when Google asks for verification information.
  5. Choose the service-area option and turn off Show business address to customers.
  6. Add only the cities, postal codes, or areas you genuinely serve.
  7. Complete your phone, website, hours, services, and description consistently.
  8. Follow the verification method Google offers.

Google's address instructions state that hiding an address leaves the service area visible. Its service-area guidance currently allows up to 20 named service areas and says the overall boundary generally should not extend much beyond about two hours of driving from the business base. Accuracy matters more than coloring in the biggest map.

Protect your privacy without weakening trust

Open the live profile while signed out and confirm that the street address isn't visible. Then make the public information reassuring: use a dedicated business phone, a clear service-area statement, real work photos that don't reveal private details, and a website page explaining how appointments work.

Avoid showing house numbers, family photos, vehicle plates, children's schedules, or documents with personal information. If your address remains visible after you turn it off, don't create another profile. Recheck the location setting and contact Google Business Profile support.

Rules for business registration, licensing, zoning, home occupations, and privacy vary by location. A hidden Google address does not override local requirements, so check the rules where you live and get qualified local advice when needed.
