Do the number and quality of Google reviews affect local SEO?

The short answer

Yes. Google says review count and positive ratings can help local ranking, and reviews also influence whether a person feels comfortable contacting you. But there isn't a magic number. A steady pattern of honest, recent, specific feedback is more useful than a suspicious burst of generic five-star ratings.

What Google actually says

Google's local ranking guidance lists relevance, distance, and prominence as its main local factors. Under prominence, it says review quantity and positive ratings can help local ranking.

That doesn't make reviews a vending machine where ten more stars buy position one. Distance and relevance still matter. Competitors, the search phrase, the searcher's location, your categories, your profile, and your wider web presence all affect the result.

Reviews also do a second job that rankings can't: they answer a nervous customer's questions. A useful review might mention punctuality, what was cleaned, how a problem was handled, or whether the final price matched the estimate.

Build a review habit you can maintain

Ask after a clear success moment, such as delivery, project approval, or a happy follow-up message. Send the customer your direct Google review link and make the request easy:

Thank you for trusting me with your move-out clean. If you have two minutes, would you share an honest Google review? Specific details about what was helpful can make the review useful to another customer.

Ask every eligible customer through the same normal process, not only people you expect to praise you. Google's review tips encourage honest, balanced reviews and note that a mix of feedback can feel more trustworthy.

Don't trade for praise

Never buy reviews, offer a reward only for a positive rating, review your own business, or ask friends to pretend they were customers. Don't pressure someone to mention keywords.

The FTC's reviews and testimonials rule guidance addresses fake or false reviews and incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment. Other countries and platforms have their own rules. So check the requirements that apply where you operate and get qualified advice if your program is unusual.

Respond like a real owner

Thank positive reviewers without copying the same response fifty times. For criticism, pause, confirm the facts, acknowledge the person's experience, explain the practical next step, and move private details offline. Don't reveal appointment information or argue about personal circumstances in public.

Track requests, completed reviews, repeated compliments, and repeated complaints. The themes can improve your sales page and, more importantly, the service itself.
