How do I handle an order when the customer entered the wrong shipping address?

The short answer

Pause fulfillment immediately, verify the corrected address through the order's authenticated contact method, update every system that will use it, and send written confirmation. Once a carrier has accepted the package, your options become more limited and may cost money.

If the order has not shipped

  1. Put the order on hold so a warehouse, dropshipper, or print provider cannot release it.
  2. Reply through the email or marketplace account attached to the order. Do not accept a high-risk address change from an unrelated message without verifying the customer.
  3. Ask the customer to send the complete corrected address, including unit, postal code, and country.
  4. Run address validation, but confirm any suggested change with the customer when it alters meaningful details.
  5. Update the order, fulfillment request, label, packing slip, and tax or shipping calculation where the platform requires it.
  6. Send the customer the final address and revised delivery expectation.

Shopify says an address error must be resolved before fulfillment and recommends contacting the customer when the correction is uncertain. Its address-validation guide explains warning and error states. Shopify also notes that changing the destination can recalculate taxes in its order-editing considerations. Follow your platform's process rather than editing only a private spreadsheet.

If a label exists but the package has not been handed over

Void or cancel the unused label if permitted, confirm whether the charge will be credited, and buy a new label. Cover or remove the old barcode completely. Check that the fulfillment confirmation contains the new tracking number.

If the carrier already has it

Tell the customer honestly that the parcel is in transit. Check whether the carrier allows an intercept, hold-for-pickup, or address correction and who may request it. Do not promise success. Record any fee and obtain the customer's confirmation before charging it when your policy and local rules permit.

If the parcel returns to you, inspect it and agree on reshipment or refund treatment under your published policy and applicable consumer law. Responsibility can depend on the facts and location, so use qualified local advice for disputed or high-value cases.

Prevent repeat problems

Enable checkout address validation or autocomplete, show an address-confirmation step, and place a brief “check your apartment number” reminder near checkout. Shopify's address-collection settings describe validation and autocomplete options on its platform.

Keep an internal log with order, original address, requested change, verification, action, cost, and result. That protects the customer and gives your team one calm process to follow.
