Selling & Business Models
How do I build a social media management portfolio before I have clients?
The short answer
Create one complete, clearly labeled sample campaign and one project you run for yourself or a willing organization. Show strategy, judgment, workflow, and measurement, not only a grid of attractive posts.
Build a realistic sample
Choose a business type, audience, offer, platform, goal, constraints, and 30-day period. Label it “concept campaign” so nobody mistakes it for paid client work.
Include:
- Short audience and brand brief.
- Content pillars and why each exists.
- Two-week calendar with several formats.
- Captions, accessible image descriptions, and creative files. W3C explains that useful text alternatives depend on an image’s purpose and context, so do not treat alt text as a keyword box (W3C images tutorial).
- Approval and scheduling workflow.
- Comment-response examples and escalation rules.
- Simple report with hypothetical metrics clearly marked.
- One revision based on what the data might show.
Do not use another company’s logo, photos, or customer quotes without permission.
Create real evidence ethically
Run your own focused account or offer a bounded paid founding package. If you volunteer, use a scope, approvals, and access controls. Ask permission before publishing results or private messages.
Never invent analytics screenshots, followers, reviews, or testimonials. FTC rules prohibit fake reviews and incentives conditioned on positive sentiment (FTC reviews rule Q&A). If results are from your own account, say so.
Explain your decisions
For each portfolio piece, write the goal, audience insight, creative choice, distribution plan, measurement, and next recommendation. A client wants to see whether you can connect content to her business, not merely operate a design tool.
Make the portfolio itself easy to scan. Put the most relevant case first, state your role, and add one clear package and contact action. Replace concept work as real projects earn permission to be shown.
