How fast does a landing page need to load, and what should I fix first if it is slow?

The short answer

Aim for the main content to appear within about 2.5 seconds for most real visits, then make the page respond quickly and stay visually stable. Fix the largest above-the-fold element and unnecessary third-party code before obsessing over tiny files.

Use real-user targets

Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance recommends, at the 75th percentile of page visits, Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or less (web.dev Web Vitals). Test both mobile and desktop, but prioritize the devices and connections your visitors actually use.

Fix in this order

  1. Server and page response: slow hosting, redirects, and uncached pages delay everything.
  2. Hero image or video: resize to displayed dimensions, compress, use a modern format, and avoid autoplay video unless it earns its weight.
  3. Critical resource discovery: make the main image available in the HTML and do not lazy-load it.
  4. Third-party scripts: remove unused chat, tracking, heatmap, font, and widget code.
  5. JavaScript and CSS: defer noncritical work and reduce large bundles.
  6. Layout stability: reserve image, video, ad, and form-message space so content does not jump.

web.dev’s LCP guide explains that the main element is often an image or text using a web font and recommends making that resource discoverable early and reducing its size (web.dev LCP optimization).

Test the actual page

Measure the published URL with its consent banner, analytics, form, and ad parameters. Lab tools help diagnose. Field data shows what visitors experience. Retest after each large change and keep screenshots or a short performance log.

Do not remove accessibility, clear copy, or needed consent controls to improve a score. A fast page that people cannot understand or use is still a poor page.
