How do I sell coaching by diagnosing fit instead of using high-pressure sales tactics?

The short answer

Run the sales conversation as a mutual fit check. Understand the person’s situation, let her hear herself think, explain exactly how you work, and make a recommendation that includes “not this” when coaching is not the right help.

Set the frame at the beginning

Say how long the conversation will take and what will happen: “I’ll ask about what you want and what has been getting in the way. If I believe my program fits, I’ll explain it and the price. Either way, we’ll decide on a clear next step.”

Then ask questions you genuinely need answered:

  • What would she like to be different?
  • Why does it matter now?
  • What has she already tried?
  • What kind of support is she looking for?
  • Is there a deadline, budget, or decision-maker you should know about?
  • Does the issue require licensed or specialist care beyond your scope?

Do not manufacture pain, challenge her worth, or keep digging for personal disclosures merely to make “no” uncomfortable.

Recommend, then leave room

Summarize what you heard and ask whether you understood. If there is a fit, explain the relevant package, what it includes, what it does not include, the price, and what success requires from both sides. ICF’s core competencies emphasize partnering with the client to create clear agreements about the relationship, process, plans, and goals (ICF core competencies).

If there is no fit, say why kindly and point toward another type of support when you can. A “no” can protect both people.

Give the prospect space to decide unless there is a real enrollment deadline. Send a short written recap and answer factual questions. Don’t invent scarcity, offer a surprise discount only after hesitation, or promise a result you cannot control. The FTC’s advertising resources center the same basic standard: claims should be truthful, supported, and not misleading (FTC advertising guidance).

Track fit over time: which conversations became good working relationships, which clients left early, and which expectations were misunderstood. The quality of your “yes” matters more than the percentage of calls you close.
