How do I research Amazon FBA products and judge whether a niche is too competitive?
The short answer
Judge an Amazon FBA niche by demand stability, concentration of sales, buyer dissatisfaction, price and fee room, review barriers, product risk, and your ability to improve the offer. A high search estimate beside a low competitor count is not enough.
Read the market as a customer need
Amazon's Product Opportunity Explorer groups search terms into niches based on products customers view or buy. Amazon says the tool can show search, purchase, review, pricing, competition, seasonality, and return information. Its Product Opportunity Explorer page also says the insights are guidance, not a guaranteed outcome. Amazon's product-ideas guide suggests combining tools such as Best Sellers, Movers & Shakers, and Product Opportunity Explorer rather than relying on a single list.
For each candidate niche, record:
- search trend across at least a year.
- average and range of selling prices.
- number of meaningful competing products and sellers.
- how much demand appears concentrated in the top few listings.
- review-count distribution, not only the largest count.
- common complaints and return reasons.
- size, weight, breakage, seasonality, and restrictions.
- realistic landed cost and FBA fee estimate.
Look for an improvement you can prove
Read one-star through three-star reviews across several products. Group complaints by function, durability, instructions, packaging, sizing, and missing features. Then ask whether you can solve a meaningful problem without making unsupported claims or creating a product too expensive for the market.
“Better quality” is not a specification. “A lid hinge tested for repeated opening, with a replaceable gasket and illustrated cleaning instructions” is something a supplier can quote and you can inspect.
Calculate the price floor
Use Amazon's Revenue Calculator with exact weight, dimensions, category, sale price, and fulfillment method. Add landed product cost, inspection, inbound freight, packaging, advertising, return allowance, and overhead outside the tool.
Stress-test a lower price because competitors can discount. If a $28 product earns $7 contribution profit at the expected price but loses money at $24, understand how likely that price pressure is before ordering.
Use a competition scorecard
Score each factor from 0 to 2:
| Factor | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demand | weak or falling | mixed | stable or rising |
| Sales concentration | dominated | moderate | spread across offers |
| Buyer gap | no clear gap | small | repeated, solvable problem |
| Margin resilience | fragile | workable | room for downside |
| Product risk | high | manageable | simple |
| Defensible improvement | vague | visible | meaningful and provable |
This is your decision aid, not an Amazon rating. A low total means “do not order yet,” not “collect more optimistic estimates.”
Before sourcing, check category approval, product restrictions, labeling, safety, import, and intellectual-property requirements for the markets you serve. These rules vary. Get regulator or qualified local help where the facts are unclear.
