Selling & Business Models
Shopify or Etsy: which is a better fit for a dropshipping business?
The short answer
For ordinary dropshipping of ready-made goods, Shopify is usually the practical choice because Etsy generally does not allow that model. Etsy says dropshipping is prohibited except for limited craft and party supplies. It allows production partners, including print-on-demand services, when the item uses the seller's original design or the buyer's customization. Read Etsy's current dropshipping and reselling policy before treating the two platforms as interchangeable.
Choose Shopify when the model is permitted but you need your own traffic
Shopify gives you a store and integrations. It does not give you a built-in crowd of buyers. You control product selection, branding, pages, and customer journey, subject to Shopify's terms and applicable laws. You also carry recurring plan costs and may pay more transaction fees depending on the payment setup. Compare current terms on Shopify's official pricing page.
Shopify is the clearer fit when:
- you sell permitted ready-made products from a supplier.
- you can create an original brand and useful customer experience.
- you have a plan for search, email, partnerships, content, or ads.
- you are prepared to handle support, refunds, and supplier failures.
- the margin supports store, payment, acquisition, and problem costs.
Choose Etsy only when the product honestly fits Etsy
Etsy may fit if you designed the item and a disclosed production partner makes it, or if the product falls within another allowed category such as qualifying craft supplies. “I chose it from a catalog” does not turn a mass-produced item into a seller-designed product.
Etsy states that items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller under its Creativity Standards. Its What Can I Sell page describes those categories and places responsibility for compliance on the seller.
Do not choose by traffic alone
Etsy's marketplace traffic is attractive, but a policy mismatch can put listings or the shop at risk. Shopify's flexibility is attractive, but a beautiful store with no acquisition plan is still empty. Score each option on permission, buyer fit, traffic access, fixed cost, order margin, control, and operational workload.
For the same product, calculate one ordinary order and one returned order. For Shopify, allocate the monthly plan and essential app cost over a conservative order count. For Etsy, include listing, transaction, payment, and any applicable attributed-ad fees. If Etsy does not permit the model, the calculation stops there.
A useful third question
Ask whether classic dropshipping is the right model at all. If your strength is original design, print on demand may give you a defensible product. If your strength is curation, a small wholesale inventory test may improve control and delivery. The platform should follow the value you create, not define it.
WAHMN's Dropshipping Profit System can help you build the permitted, profitable version of the model on the right storefront.
