How do I find search queries in Search Console that are already bringing visitors to my site?

The short answer

Open Performance > Search results, turn on Clicks and Impressions, and select the Queries tab. Sort by clicks to find searches already sending visitors. Then filter by a specific page to see which queries lead to that page, and compare date ranges to find gains and losses.

Find the useful list

Start with the last three months so a slow week doesn't distort the picture. Google's Performance report task guide says you can select the Queries tab and sort its columns by clicks, CTR, or impressions.

Use each sort for a different job:

  • Clicks: Your proven traffic sources.
  • Impressions: Topics where Google already sees some relevance, even if few people click.
  • CTR: Queries where the result earns or misses attention, interpreted alongside position.
  • Position: A rough way to separate pages already near visibility from pages that still have a long climb.

Now choose the Pages tab, click one URL, and return to Queries. That page filter turns a noisy sitewide list into a practical editing brief.

Turn query data into page improvements

Group close variations by meaning. “How to price house cleaning” and “house-cleaning pricing guide” may belong to the same intent. Don't force every phrase into the copy.

Create three notes for the page:

  1. Already answered well: Relevant queries earning clicks. Protect the useful sections when you update.
  2. Visible but under-served: Relevant, meaningful-impression queries that the page only partly answers. Add a clear paragraph, example, or section if it genuinely helps.
  3. Wrong fit: Queries that don't match the offer. Clarify the title and opening rather than chasing accidental traffic.

For example, a page about custom wedding cookies might receive impressions for “how to ship decorated cookies.” If you actually ship them, a careful section on packaging and delivery may help. If you only serve local pickup, say that plainly. Relevance is more valuable than bigger but misleading traffic.

Compare instead of guessing

Set Date > Compare and look for queries with meaningful movement. Then check whether the associated page changed, competitors published something stronger, search demand shifted, or Google began showing a different result format.

Search Console's Performance report documentation notes that the newest data can be preliminary and that query and page tables aggregate data differently. Don't make a major decision from one day's wobble.

Finally, track what happens after the click. A query that brings ten ideal inquiries can matter more than one that brings a thousand curious visitors.
